Guidance on referencing with Requirements and Advice Documents (RADs)

  • When referencing documents, including external documents or other RADs, check that the requirements you require actually exist in the reference document.
  • External documents and RADs are updated regularly, check the reference is still valid.
  • Make sure the performance criteria you require from the external document or RAD are listed in your document and that you have a stated value for that performance requirement.

For example:

  • 1.1 Combined kerb and drainage systems shall be compliant with BS EN 1433.
  • 1.2 The Strength Class of combined kerb and drainage units systems shall be D400.
  • 1.3 The Weathering Resistance of combined kerb and drainage units shall be +R.
  • 1.4 The Material of combined kerb and drainage units shall be Concrete.
  • Saying, combined kerb and drainage system shall be compliant with BS EN 1433, isn’t sufficient because all the performance characteristic above are not defined, therefore they can be NR – performance not declared – and still be compliant with the specification / design.
  • Use the reference manager or the standard format requirement for section references (SHW CARS suite only) as this will automatically provide the referencing for you – it will be in the correct format and the latest version etc.
